A historical perspective on the scientific chairs

So far, {51} academic chairs have been established under  His Majesty’s name, Sultan Qaboos bin Said - may Allah protect him - in various universities of the world, according to the dates of establishment:

  • Sultan Qaboos bin Said chair for Arab and Islamic Studies at Georgetown University USA- created in 1980
  • Sultan Qaboos bin Said Arabic Language Proficiency chair - Georgetown University -created in 1993
  • His Majesty Sultan Qaboos Desert Farming chair at the Arabian Gulf University in Bahrain - created in 1994.
  • Sultan of Oman chair for Arab and Islamic Studies at the University of Melbourne, Australia - created in 2003.
  • Sultan of Oman International Relations Professorship chair at Harvard University, USA - created in 2003.
  • Sultan of Oman International Fellowship at Oxford Centre for Islamic Studies, University of Oxford, United Kingdom - created in 2004.
  • Sultan Qaboos chair for Information Technology at the University of Engineering and Technology in Lahore, Republic of Pakistan - created in 2004.

 

  • Sultan Qaboos chair for Information Technology at the University of Ned for Engineering and Technology in Karachi, Republic of Pakistan - created in 2004.
  • His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said Chair for Modern Arab Studies at the University of Cambridge in the United Kingdom – created in 2005.
  • Sultan Qaboos Chair for Water Management and Economic Diversification at the University of Utrecht Dutch - created in 2005.
  • Sultan Qaboos Chair for Arabic Language Studies at the University of Beijing in People's Republic of China - created in 2007.
  • Sultan of Oman Chair for Oriental Studies at the University of Leiden, the Netherlands - created in 2008.
  • Sultan Qaboos Chair for Middle-Eastern Studies at the University of Tokyo, Japan - was established in 2010 to coincide with the Sultanate's celebrations of the 40th National Day.
  • His Majesty Sultan Qaboos chair for Abrahamic Religions and Common Values at the University of Cambridge in the United Kingdom - created in 2011.
  • Sultan Qaboos Chair for Middle- Eastern Studies at the College of William and Mary in the United States - created in 2011.

Major Goals these chairs are seeking to achieve

  • Aiming to introduce the cultural role provided by the Sultanate in the development of human knowledge.
  • Promoting access to a contemporary global society to live in a peaceful environment, guided by mutual understanding and tolerance.
  • Supporting scientific and research studies.
  • Highlighting the role of the Sultanate in the rapprochement between the Arab and foreign cultures in addition to cultural convergence between people to pave the way to a constructive dialogue.
  • Introducing the world to the renaissance of Oman and its constant need to develop the Arabic language, heritage cultural and scientific studies.
